What Is Medigap Plan F?
Plan F is the most comprehensive Medicare Supplement plan available, covering all Medicare Part A and Part B out-of-pocket costs. However, Plan F is only available to people who became eligible for Medicare before January 1, 2020.
Important Eligibility Note
If you became eligible for Medicare on or after January 1, 2020, you cannot purchase Plan F. Instead, Plan G is the most comprehensive option available to you.
What Does Plan F Cover?
Plan F covers 100% of all Medicare-approved costs:
- Part A coinsurance and hospital costs
- Part B coinsurance or copayment
- Blood (first 3 pints)
- Part A hospice care coinsurance
- Skilled nursing facility care coinsurance
- Part A deductible ($1,736 in 2026)
- Part B deductible ($283 in 2026)
- Part B excess charges (100%)
- Foreign travel emergency (80%, up to plan limits)
Plan F vs. Plan G
The only difference between Plan F and Plan G is that Plan F covers the Part B deductible ($283 in 2026). However:
- Plan F premiums are typically $20-$40 higher per month ($240-$480 per year)
- You save $283 per year with Plan F by having the deductible covered
- But you pay $240-$480 more in premiums, so Plan G usually saves money overall
Should You Keep Plan F or Switch to Plan G?
If you already have Plan F:
- You can keep it for life (it's guaranteed renewable)
- Consider switching to Plan G if your Plan F premium is significantly higher
- Switching may require medical underwriting unless you have guaranteed issue rights
High Deductible Plan F
Some insurance companies offer a high-deductible version with a $2,950 annual deductible (2025) and much lower monthly premiums.
